Debt Consolidation – Should You Consider It?

If you have many debts, you may wonder whether you need to act to reduce your debts. It is not always easy to tell when debts are such a problem that they need to be addressed right away. In general, though, the following signs indicate that debt consolidation may be a good idea for you:

• You can only afford to pay the minimum each month on your credit cards and bill payments. If you can only afford the minimum payments, then even smaller debts will take you a very long to repay, since with minimum payments you are usually paying off mostly the interest, and not the principal. Debt consolidation can help you dramatically reduce your monthly payments and your interest so that you can pay off your debts faster.

• After you pay your monthly credit card payments, little of your paycheck remains. If most of your paycheck goes towards credit card debts repayment, then your standard of living is taking a beating. Plus, you are putting yourself into financial jeopardy – if during one month your check is smaller, then you will not be able to pay your debts.

• You use credit cards or cash advances to pay your debts. This indicates that you cannot afford your debts. Luckily, debt consolidation can make your monthly credit card bills affordable again.

• You are late with bill payments because you cannot afford them. Late payments usually incur additional charges and lead to a cycle of growing indebtedness.

• You worry about bill payments. If your debts are causing you stress, debt consolidation can help make your debts smaller and easier to pay off so that you feel less anxiety.

• You have to use credit cards or lines of credit to pay for items you could afford to pay for with cash before. This indicates that your debts are making your life unaffordable.

• More than two of your credit cards carry balances from month to month regularly. If you carry a few balances, then your debts are growing very quickly, potentially leading to serious financial problems.
